Why Your Google Ads Conversion Tracking Stopped Working (and How to Fix It)

Few things are worse than logging into Google Ads and seeing a flat line where your conversions used to be. Campaigns are still spending, but the data has gone quiet — and Google's Smart Bidding is now optimizing on nothing. Here's why conversion tracking breaks, how to find the cause, and how to fix it fast.

Why it's so easy to miss

Google Ads doesn't alert you when conversions stop. The account keeps running, the interface keeps loading, and unless you happen to check the conversions column, a break can go unnoticed for days — while Smart Bidding quietly degrades because it's lost its signal.

The most common causes

1. The Google tag was removed or edited

A developer ships a site update, migrates platforms, or edits the theme, and the global site tag (gtag.js) or Google Tag Manager container gets removed or broken. This is the number-one cause.

2. A conversion action was paused or removed

Someone editing conversion settings paused a primary conversion action, or a conversion action's status flipped to inactive because it stopped receiving conversions.

3. A tag manager change

A GTM trigger was edited, a tag was paused, or a container was published without the conversion tag firing on the right page.

4. Consent Mode or cookie changes

A new consent banner or Consent Mode v2 misconfiguration can prevent the conversion tag from firing for a large share of users.

5. A checkout or thank-you page URL changed

If your conversion fires on a specific URL and that URL changed during a redesign, the trigger no longer matches.

How to diagnose it, step by step

  1. Check conversion action status. In Google Ads → Goals → Conversions, look at each action's status. “No recent conversions” or “Inactive” is your first clue.
  2. Use Google Tag Assistant. Load your conversion page and confirm the Google tag and the conversion event actually fire.
  3. Complete a test conversion. Trigger the action yourself and watch whether it records.
  4. Review recent site or GTM changes. Line up the date conversions dropped with your last deploy or container publish.

How to fix it

  • Reinstall or repair the Google tag / GTM container if it was removed.
  • Re-activate or recreate the paused conversion action.
  • Update the conversion trigger to match the new page URL.
  • Fix your consent configuration so the tag fires for consented users.

The real fix: catch it in minutes, not days

Every step above assumes you already noticed the problem. That's the catch — nobody manually audits conversion tracking across every client account each day. Taglert checks whether your accounts have active, primary conversion actions and are still recording conversions, and alerts you the moment tracking goes quiet — so you find out before your client does.

Stop finding out about broken tracking from your client.

Taglert monitors your pixels and conversion tracking 24/7 and alerts you the moment something breaks. 7-day free trial, no credit card.
