Conversions fell off a cliff. Spend is unchanged. Before you start rewriting creative or slashing budgets, stop — this pattern usually means the tracking broke, not the campaigns. Here's how to tell in a few minutes.
The tell: a cliff, not a slope
Real performance changes are almost always gradual — creative fatigue, seasonality, and competition move numbers over days or weeks. Tracking failures are step-changes: conversions go from 40/day to 3/day overnight while sessions, clicks, and spend stay flat.
If the drop happened on a single day and nothing else moved with it, suspect tracking first.
The 5-minute diagnostic
- Check backend revenue. The fastest signal of all: did actual orders/leads drop in the client's CRM or ecommerce platform? If real sales are steady but reported conversions crashed, it's tracking. Full stop.
- Check both platforms. Did Meta andGoogle both drop on the same day? That points to a site-wide change (a deploy or a consent banner). One platform only points to that platform's tag.
- Check event receipt. Meta Events Manager: are events still arriving? Google Ads: is the conversion action still recording?
- Check the date against deploys. Ask the client what shipped that day. A redesign, a plugin update, a new cookie banner, a tag manager publish — one of these is usually the answer.
- Test it yourself. Complete a conversion and watch whether it registers.
The usual suspects
- A site deploy removed the tag — the most common cause.
- A new consent banner is blocking tags.
- A conversion action was paused or its trigger URL changed.
- A CAPI/server integration stopped sending.
- Match keys were dropped, tanking EMQ and attribution.
Why this costs so much
The damage isn't just bad reporting. Smart Bidding and Meta's algorithm optimize on the conversions they see. When tracking breaks, they start optimizing on a fraction of reality — so performance genuinely degrades on top of the reporting problem. Every day it goes unnoticed compounds.
Or: find out the same day
The whole diagnostic above assumes you noticed. Most agencies notice at the weekly check-in — up to seven days late. Taglert watches pixel activity, EMQ, duplicate rate, and conversion recording across every account every 30 minutes and alerts you the moment the step-change happens, so you diagnose it that day instead of next Monday.
