What 'Conversion Tracking Unverified' Means in Google Ads

What 'Conversion Tracking Unverified' Means in Google Ads

You open Google Ads and a conversion action is flagged “Unverified,” “Inactive,” or “No recent conversions.” These statuses look similar but mean different things — and knowing which is which tells you exactly where to look.

What each status means

  • Unverified— Google hasn't confirmed the tag is installed and working. Usually the tag was created in the interface but never successfully deployed on the site, or it can't be detected.
  • No recent conversions— the tag was working at some point but hasn't recorded a conversion recently. Either genuinely no conversions happened, or the tracking broke.
  • Inactive — no conversions recorded in an extended period. Google effectively stops counting on it, which also means Smart Bidding loses that signal.
  • Recording conversions — the healthy state you want.

Why it matters more than it looks

An unverified or inactive primary conversion action means Smart Bidding is flying blind. Your campaigns keep spending, but the optimization signal is missing or stale — so you pay full price for degraded targeting. This is the quiet way tracking problems turn into wasted budget.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the Google tag is on the siteand firing site-wide (Google Tag Assistant). If it's missing, that's your answer — see the setup checklist.
  2. Check the conversion trigger matches reality. If the thank-you page URL changed during a redesign, the trigger never fires — a classic post-migration failure.
  3. Rule out consent blocking. A cookie banner can prevent the tag from firing entirely — see Consent Mode v2.
  4. Complete a test conversion and confirm it records (allowing for reporting delay).
  5. Check it's still marked primary if you rely on it for bidding.

Don't wait to stumble across it

Google doesn't email you when a conversion action goes unverified — the status just quietly changes in an interface nobody checks daily, least of all across a dozen client accounts. Taglert checks conversion-action status and recent conversion volume on every connected Google Ads account every 30 minutes and alerts you the moment tracking stops being verified — so you catch it in minutes, not at the next audit.

Stop finding out about broken tracking from your client.
