Server-Side vs Browser-Side Tracking: A Media Buyer's Guide

Server-Side vs Browser-Side Tracking: A Media Buyer's Guide

“Server-side tracking” gets thrown around a lot, often like it's a silver bullet. Here's what it actually is, how it differs from the browser-side tracking you're used to, and why the best setups use both.

Browser-side tracking

This is the classic approach: a snippet of JavaScript (like the Meta Pixel or Google tag) runs in the visitor's browser and sends events directly to the ad platform. It's easy to install and captures rich browser context.

The problem:it's increasingly blocked. Ad blockers, browser privacy defaults, and rules like Apple's App Tracking Transparency stop a growing share of browser events from ever reaching the platform.

Server-side tracking

Here, events are sent from your serverto the ad platform — for example via Meta's Conversions API or a server-side Google Tag Manager container. Because the request comes from your server rather than the browser, it isn't blocked by ad blockers or browser privacy features the same way.

  • More reliable delivery — events aren't dropped by the browser.
  • Better data control — you decide what customer parameters to attach, improving match quality.
  • More setup — it requires a server endpoint or a server-side container, so it's more technical to implement.

Why you want both

Server-side isn't a replacement for browser-side — it's a complement. Browser events capture context and fire instantly; server events recover the conversions the browser loses. Running both (with proper deduplication) gives you the most complete, resilient picture. This dual setup is now the recommended standard for both Meta and Google.

Two paths means two things to monitor

The tradeoff of a dual setup is that there are now two integrations that can break — and a broken server feed or a duplicate-event spike is easy to miss. Taglert watches both sides across every connected account and alerts you when either one degrades, so your server-side investment keeps paying off.
