Enhanced conversions are one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort upgrades you can make to a Google Ads account — and as third-party cookies fade, they matter more every quarter. Here's what they do and how to confirm yours are actually working.
What enhanced conversions are
When a conversion happens, enhanced conversions send Google a hashed piece of first-party datayou already collected — typically the customer's email — alongside the standard conversion event. Google uses that hashed data to match the conversion to a signed-in user it couldn't otherwise attribute. It's privacy-safe (the data is hashed before it leaves the browser) and it recovers conversions that would otherwise go uncounted.
Why they matter now
- Cookie loss.As browsers restrict third-party cookies, more conversions can't be matched the old way. First-party hashed data fills the gap.
- Better Smart Bidding. More accurately measured conversions means the algorithm optimizes on better data — which usually improves performance, not just reporting.
- Recovered volume. Many accounts see a measurable lift in reported conversions after enabling them, simply because more get matched.
The two flavors
Enhanced conversions for web improve measurement of on-site conversions. Enhanced conversions for leads let you tie offline conversions (a lead that closes later in your CRM) back to the original click using the hashed email. Most advertisers want the web version at minimum.
How to check yours are working
- In Google Ads → Goals → Conversions → Settings, confirm enhanced conversions are turned on.
- Check the diagnostics: Google reports whether it's receiving usable enhanced-conversion data and flags issues like unhashed or missing fields.
- Confirm your conversion page is actually passing the email/phone field to the tag — a setup that's “on” but receiving no data does nothing.
- Watch for a status that reads “recording enhanced conversions,” not just “enabled.”
Where it quietly breaks
Enhanced conversions depend on your site passing the right field to the tag. A redesign, a form change, or a consent configurationcan stop that field from being sent — so enhanced conversions silently stop contributing while the setting still shows “on.” That's the kind of degradation you only catch if you're watching conversion volume and status over time.
Keep the whole conversion setup honest
Enhanced conversions are one layer on top of your core conversion tracking — and if the underlying tag or conversion action breaks, everything above it goes with it. Taglert monitors your Google Ads conversion tracking every 30 minutes and alerts you when conversions stop recording, so the foundation your enhanced conversions sit on keeps working.
